The longer you shoot, the longer the trails will be. Unlike when we photograph pinpoint stars, where we limit our shutter speed, in star trail images, we ignore that limitation and shoot ultra-long exposures at night that range from a few minutes to a few hours. Because of the earth’s rotation, from our perspective, the stars appear to be moving in the sky, offering us the possibility of capturing streaks of light.
